Kapuas Hulu is a West Kalimantan province located east of Pontianak. The Kapuas Hulu district covers a total area of 29.842 Km2 or approximately 20,33 % of West Kalimantan's total area(146.807 Km2). Kapuas Hulu consists of 23 sub districts, and 2 major ethnic groups: the Dayak and the Malay. At least 19 sub ethnic tribes of Dayak have been identified in Kapuas Hulu. Those subs ethnic tribes have different cultures, languages and livelihoods.

56.51%(1,686,318 hectare) of Kapuas Hulu is protected area. Beside the beauty of the two National parks, the culture and livelihood of the local communities offer an unforgettable experience.

Putussibau is the diatrict's main town. It is easily accessible and can be reached via Pontianak, Sariaman, Sarawak Malaysia, and East Kalimantan. There are 3 main entrances to Kapuas Hulu, namely, Kapuas river (the longest river in Indonesia), road, and air.


Betung Kerihun National Park

Betung Kerihun National Park ( about 8.000 Km2 ) is the second largest protected area in Kalimantan. The park is mostly mountainous and contains a broad range of vegetation types including lowland, hill and lower montane, and upper montane tropical rain forests.

The Kapuas River spanning 1,143 km originates from this park, It is the longest river in Indonesia. The hydrology is unique with hundreds of streams and big rivers that form part of the Kapuas watersheds, caves, and Karsts Mountain. With its unique ecosystems, Betung Kerihun National Park holds a rich biodiversity of plants, animals, birds, and fishes. Depending on the ecosystem you are in, you will encounter different animals at different locations. One of the primates you might see is the wild orangutan.

  • 48 species of other mammals species

  • 301 species of avifauna/birds (24 species are endemic to Borneo)

  • 112 species of fish (14 species are endemic to Borneo)

    Danau Sentarum National Park

    This national park is a wetland area that contains very large lakes(132,000hectares) and hundreds of small islands. The park, which has been registered as Ramsar site since 1994, is host of at least 250 species of freshwater fishes, mammals, reptiles, birds, and variaties of flora. Some of the flora indicated are endemic of Borneo.

    Traditional local activities include honey bee production and the daily life of fishing.


    Community

    The Dayak ethnic is the biggest group on Borneo. In Kapuas Hulu- West Kalimantan, at least 19 tribes of Dayak exist using different languages, traditions, and cultures. The livelihood and culture of Dayak as indigenous people in Kapuas Hulu is unique and exciting. The longhouse (betang) is the artistic home of the majority of Dayak. The longhouse communities are tolerant, and offer great hospitality. Some of the oldest longhouses with large and high pillars are still maintained by the local community and accessible for visiters.
    The Malay are another tribal group who live in the Kapuas Hulu district. The majority of them live in lowland areas. Their livelihood mostly depends on the river. The livelihood and culture of the ethinic groups are very different, also mong the Dayak and Malay themselves.
