TOP > Information > How to reach the Kapuas Hulu?
STEP1 Enter Kalimantan Island / STEP2 In Pontianak City / STEP3 Pontinanak - Putussibau / STEP4 In Putussibau

Unfortunately it is not possible for us to book an international flight for you, because we don't have a branch office in overseas. If you want to come to Kapuas Hulu without an organized group tour, you will have to book two domestic flights for example from Jakarta - one to Pontianak and one from Pontianak to Putussibau, the district capital of Kapuas Hulu. You can laso take a flught from another big cities, like Jogjakarta and Kuching to Pontianak. it is easy to book the flight to Pontianak, and short term reservations are no problem. In the big cities English is usually spoken in the travel agencies. The flight from Pontianak to Putussibau (and back) can only be booked in Pontianak or Putussibau. This page shows useful information for travelling in West Kalimantan.

STEP1. Enter Kalimantan Island

You can choose three ways to access Pontianak, West Kalimantan:

  • from Jakarta
  • It is easy to book a flight from Jakarta to Pontianak. There are a lot of the travel agencies in touristy areas of bigger cities, and you can buy the ticket there. In general, some airlines (Garuda Airways, Lion air, Sriwijaya Air, Batavia Air) has daily flights from Jakarta to Pontianak and back. It is difficult to book these tickets online, and we therefore recommend to book your domestic flight upon your arrival in Indonesia. The airfares depend on the season, the generally range between 450,000 - 900,000 IDR. Flight time is about 1 hour.

  • from Kuching, Malaysia
  • It is also possible to take a plane from Kuching, Malaysia. Malaysia Air Service and BATAVIA Air have air connections to Pontianak from here. The ticket prices range between 450,000Rp and 520,000Rp. The flight time is about 20 minutes. This route might be recommendable if you are already in Malaysia or if you enter the area via Singapore.

  • from Singapore or Sumatra
  • If you fly to Singapore, you can easily reach Pontianak via Batam. Batam is a town on a small Indonesian island right off mainland Sumatra and very close to Singapore, that acts mainly as a gateway between Singapore and Indonesia. There are ferries every half an hour from early morning to late evening connecting Singapore (get off at the MRT-Subway station "Harbour front") and Batam, with the usual custom formalities. You can buy the ferry ticket on arrival at the harbour, there is no need to buy it in advance. From the harbour in Batam there is a taxi service to the airport (fixed fare: 70,000 Rp.). From there you can take a plane directly to Pontianak, e.g. Air Batavia.
You could also take a ferry, but that will take you a few days, and there are reports about piracy in the area.
If you choose this way you have to enter Singapore. Make sure in advance whether you need to apply for a visa to enter Singapore. Citizens of Australia, Canada, USA and the European Union do not need to apply for a visa in advance (visa issued on arrival). The passport has to be valid for at least 6 more months.

"Mau turun di sini, pak!" (I wanna get off here, sir!)

The payment of about 2000Rp has to be made directly to the driver by the time you get off. Unfortunately there are no Opelet-connections to the airport in Pontianak.
